Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side picked off Huddersfield on Saturday after adopting a three-man back line against David Wagner’s men.

Prior to the match at the John Smith’s Stadium, Pochettino had favoured a four-man defence but a late onslaught to that back line by Inter Milan saw victory snatched from their clutches.

So should Spurs favour a three-man defence to handle Barcelona’s world-class side?

Playing a back three would mean the centre backs can all man-mark Barca’s attacking trio with Ernesto Valverde preferring a 4-3-3 shape. But that could leave them vulnerable to a midfield runner, or allow Lionel Messi a free sight of goal if space opens up.

If Pochettino prefers to line Spurs up at Wembley in his previously favoured 4-2-3-1, the two defensive midfielders will have their hands full cutting the passing lanes to take the pressure off the pair of centre-backs.

However, using four at the back will allow for Tottenham’s main attackers in Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura to all hit the field, providing Eriksen recovers from his stomach injury, and stand the best chance of capitalising on a shaky Barcelona defence that has shipped five goals in their last three games.
